Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic, progressive, precancerous condition of the mouth characterized by stiffness of the oral mucosa due to abnormal collagen deposition. It is strongly associated with the use of areca nut (supari), betel quid, and tobacco chewing. Early diagnosis and management are vital to prevent malignant transformation into oral cancer.
Complete cessation of areca nut, betel quid, and tobacco is the most important step in management.
Topical steroids, antioxidants, and vitamin supplements help reduce burning and inflammation.
Severe cases may require surgical release of fibrous bands, physiotherapy, or regenerative therapies.
The primary cause is chewing areca nut (supari), betel quid, tobacco, or their combinations. Genetic and nutritional factors may also contribute.
OSMF is a chronic condition. With early intervention, symptoms can be managed and progression controlled, but advanced cases may require surgery.
Yes. OSMF is considered a premalignant condition and may progress to oral cancer in 7–13% of cases if left untreated.
